The printer we are using is the Maker Select, by Monoprice. This printer is both reliable and reasonably-priced. With this printer, we are limited to printing items within a 9x9x11 inch box.
3D printers work by pulling the thin plastic filament from the spool on the top, feeding it through the nozzle, where it is melted and laid on the printer bed. The plastic hardens almost immediately after leaving the nozzle. 3D printing is an additive process rather than a subtractive process; this means that instead of cutting or chiseling bits off, the printer builds layers using only the amount of material needed for the final product. When the print starts, the printer creates a "raft," a small plate on which to print the actual item. The raft both starts the printer printing smoothly and ensures that the item won't stick to the printer bed. |
